Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards 2017

The 2017 Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards programme has been launched.pramerica
The programme, which is jointly sponsored by Pramerica, NAPD and GCTNI, honours and rewards post-primary students for voluntary work in their communities through an exciting initiative which provides recognition and financial rewards to the 20 finalists.
This year, applications must be submitted online for judging by the Principals / Deputy Principals before 4pm on Friday, 11 November 2016.

International superpowers in education?

 

International superpowers in education?  Shanghai, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Finland of course.  Heard about the the next rising star? The Basque government, with a high degree of autonomy from the Spanish central government, has invested heavily in education.  If the Basque region were ranked as a country, only Denmark and Austria would have higher levels of per-pupil spending in Europe.  It has the hallmarks of many high achievers - with a strong sense of identity and ambition, emerging from conflict and with a need to compete with much bigger neighbours.

NAPD Learning & Teaching Workshops conducted by Graham Powell and Mike Hughes in the current academic year have engaged in the region of 250 teachers from almost 60 schools with ideas around creating more effective learning experiences in our classrooms.  Barry O’Callaghan has written a full report for the Leader, but here we want to give you a flavour of the positive feedback which the workshops received from the participants

Leader Preview Article - Derek West

 Well, the huffing and puffing is over, for the moment at any rate, and we have a brand-new, if precarious, Government installed in Kildare Street.  Richard Bruton and Heather Humphreys form the duo upon whom school leaders will be placing so many hopes. On RTE Radio, Seán O’Rourke interviewed – and challenged - both Ministers, to set out their new stalls, and to respond to some awkward questions.

Richard Bruton  articulated a positive vision: ‘You can’t have a prosperous economy without a fair society’ and he sees education as a very important way of delivering that fairness,  (i) by making it better for the learner in the classroom – especially in disadvantaged areas; (ii) by helping schools and teachers to continually improve what they do; (iii) by building stronger bridges between education and the places where people work.
