Once again this year, the NAPD Conference will take place online through the platform Hopin Wednesday, 20th, and Thursday 21st October.

We hope that this will be our last online conference and that we can all be together once again next year.

  • Please note that you must be a Fully Paid member of the NAPD to attend the Annual Conference 2021/2022
  • A Membership invoice for 2021/2022 will be issued automatically once you register for the conference if you are a non-member
  • Registration is for ONE Delegate Only, if two, three, or four would like to attend from one school, registration is needed for each individual and cannot be shared

“Well rounded, resilient and compassionate” class of 2021 wished well by school leaders as Leaving Cert exams begin

  • “The class of 2021 will go down in the history books as one which faced and overcame unprecedented challenges due to Covid-19. School leaders, teachers, their families and their peers are immensely proud of their achievements thus far and we wish them every success in their exams and all their future endeavours.” – Clive Byrne, Director, National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals;
  • The Senior Cycle this year’s 6th Years have experienced has been far from typical with school closures, remote learning and social distancing challenges faced and overcome in the past 14 months;
  • School leaders encourage students to believe in their ability, avoid the points “rat race” and remember the multiple pathways to their chosen career that lay ahead.

Clive Byrne, Director, National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) has wished the 52,000* students beginning their Leaving Certificate written exams today, Wednesday, 9 June, well. Commenting on the exams, he said:

“On behalf of all school leaders, I would like to extend my best wishes to our 6th Year students beginning their examinations today. The past school year has been extremely challenging, and all students should be immensely proud of reaching this milestone.

“The past 14 months have seen school closures, remote learning and Covid-19 precautions that affected every part of the school community, not least so, our 6th Year students. We must commend their resilience and their commitment to their education throughout and acknowledge that the circumstances they found themselves in have created a cohort of well-rounded and compassionate young adults ready to make a positive contribution to Irish life.”


“This exam season, we continue to encourage our students to focus on their wellbeing as this is ultimately just as important as any exam. It is vital that our students are supported in looking after their physical and mental health during this period.

“While the simple things like getting a good night’s sleep and eating well can go a long way, we encourage all parents to support their children during this time and remind all that their entire school community remains available for support and guidance.”

 Path ahead

“The Leaving Certificate exams mark the end of one chapter and the start of another, as our students transition from post primary to further and higher education or the workforce. The experience of studying for and completing the Leaving Cert provides students with a specific set of skills that are completely transferable and applicable to whatever they decide to do next, of which, there are many options.

“Covid has presented many challenges for our traditional education system, however, it has also created opportunities. The recent creation of multiple new apprenticeship schemes and technical programmes in our third level institutions offer additional education and training pathways to our young people, more so than ever before.

“As school leaders, we would like to encourage our Leaving Cert students not to focus on the “points race” or to be drawn into comparisons with their peers. There are many routes to your desired career and no one pathway or college course trumps another.”

Accredited grades

“In response to the pandemic, the Leaving Certificate accredited grades programme was developed and implemented by the Department of Education in consultation with a wide range of education stakeholders. This, alongside the option which has seen many students choosing to sit their traditional written examinations this month, will ensure no student will be disadvantaged by the disruption to their education over the past year. It will offer every student the ability to achieve their best possible grade.

Notes to the editor:

*Indicative figure of 52,000 includes all students who have registered for sitting at least one Leaving Certificate written examination. This number is subject to change as some students may decline the option of a written exam on the day and instead choose to accept their accredited grade.

Creative Schools Week 10-14 May, 2021


Creative Schools Week is a celebration of creativity in schools which includes both In-School Celebrations and Online Celebrations. It is organised by the Creative Schools initiative which supports schools and Youthreach centres to put the arts and creativity at the heart of children’s and young people’s lives. The week is an opportunity to share, showcase, and connect all the exciting creative work that is being undertaken across schools.

Following a consultation process with children and young people the theme for CSW is Brave New Future, celebrating our children and young people’s courage in the face of a tough year, and looking forward towards a bright future.

In-school Celebrations: All schools and centres across the country can generate and host their own celebration events. These events are a great way to involve and empower young people in the processes of presenting their creative journeys. To help schools/centres organise events, Creative Schools have provided Celebration Packs, full of ideas about creating their own in-school Creative Schools Week.

Online Celebrations: Tune in to http://www.artscouncil.ie/creative-schools/celebration-2021/ on the 12-14 May (from 12pm daily) as we will be; highlighting work from a selection of Creative Schools, as well as workshops, interviews and features across a wide range of different artists and arts and cultural organisations. It is a great opportunity to learn about school communities across the initiative as well as their creative approaches to learning and artistic responses to Covid 19. Schools highlighted are a representation of the over 460 schools who have participated in the Creative Schools initiative since 2018 and were selected following a competitive process open to those participants.

Creative Schools is a flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme to enable the creative potential of every child. Creative Schools is led by the Arts Council in partnership with the Department of Education and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

The initiative is also informed by the Arts Council’s ten-year strategy (2016–25) Making Great Art Work: Leading the Development of the Arts in Ireland.

This initiative provides opportunities for children and young people to build their artistic and creative skills; to communicate, collaborate, stimulate their imaginations, be inventive, and to harness their curiosity. A Virtual Event Like No Other.

If you haven’t registered please look at the teacher’s pack attached to get a better idea of the nature and extent of this online event and its value as a resource to schools, pupils and teachers. This event designed for TY is also of great value to LCA students and will be of benefit to all students through their TY and careers teachers.

TYTALKS21 Teachers Pack

To those schools who have registered please be advised that it is necessary to upload a CSV file of the students email addresses to the registration page using your school’s TYTalks21login to enable the students to get full access to all parts of the event and particularly to the booths. It will also ensure that the students will be able to take part in the scavenger hunt and fully participate in all the aspects of the event.

Ibec and this platform are fully GDPR compliant so there is no GDPR issue with uploading the student’s emails. This will also give the students registered a further 90 days access to the resources on the platform. Teachers will also have access to the platform for a further 90 days. A certificate of attendance for the teachers to sign for the students will be available and can be used as part of each students TY or LCA portfolio.

Finally, for those who have registered and who’s school is not in a position of financial disadvantage, it would be very much appreciated if the invoice issued for the registration could be dealt, please.

Inspire and Inform
TYTalks21 is an exciting new virtual event that has been created for all Transition Year students in Ireland. The event is designed to inspire and motivate students for the future of work.

Post-Covid, TY students will need to move forward with their education and career choices. The team at Ibec has partnered with the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principles (NAPD) to create a half-day immersive event for all of Ireland’s 45,000 TY students. The event will give insight into the world of work, the skills of the future, different career pathways and so much more.

Listen to futurists, business minds, educators, young leaders, and entrepreneurs. There will be a virtual Expo area showcasing learning and skills partners, an industries discovery zone and enjoy a fun scavenger hunt for cool prizes.

Steps to getting your school registered and attending on the day:

Register your school: Click SCHOOLS REGISTER HERE to register your school. We are asking for a nominal contribution of €250 per school, where possible, to cover the cost of the event.

Receive your school passcode: Ibec will email you your school passcode once registered. Use this code to access the platform to register your student’s email addresses.

Register your students: Click on the ‘Register your TY students’ button located at top of this page and select your school, then upload your students’ email addresses by uploading a CSV file. Don’t forget to include your own teacher’s email address.

Log-in with email address to attend: Students need to click on the ‘log-in’ button located on the top of this page and enter their email address to enter the event platform.

Leaving Certificate Appeal Outcomes Issued



The State Examinations Commission (SEC) has announced the reopening of the Candidate Self Service Portal between 12 noon on Tuesday 27th April 2021 and 6pm on Friday 30th April 2021 for candidates to review and finalise their level selection and their choices of examinations, Accredited Grades or both for the 2021 Leaving Certificate for each subject in which they are entered.
